The Witnesses BookShots edition by James Patterson Brendan DuBois Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

The plot was original and it was a good quick read for a "book shot" which I'm guessing is the new term for short book. Idk. The writing was entertaining although minimally detailed, which I sometimes prefer over books that tell me the 10 colors of a single tree leaf in 5 paragraphs. The ending didn't come as I expected since the authors subtly suggested scenarios for what each person in the family might be being protected for. I imagine when they got to writing the end of the book, the authors high-fived and shouted delightfully "Surprise ending!" However I was left disappointed with how little detail was put into explaining why I spent a couple of hours reading this book. 'Bookshot' - I get it, I think. Just enough to read without feeling bogged down. I would have just preferred to see a short chapter around the work they did with the protected witness, rather than a half dozen random sentences that gave the answer reading this book sought. It felt like a date night, when your boyfriend gets drunk and goes to sleep and you sit up thinking, "I shaved my legs for this?"

The Witnesses BookShots edition by James Patterson Brendan DuBois Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I'm assuming a lot of people read this b/c James Patterson's name was attached to it. While I was his biggest fan in my 20s, this isn't even comparable. I don't want to write a long review but this book left so many questions to be answered. There were different people involved so their were different points of view. Most of the plot seemed to be hidden in parts of the story that I hoped would come out in the end. The code names, the reason why Jason saved Sandy, the reason Teresa & the family thought Jason looked guilty, I just still don't get it. There was never an "OMG" moment for me...it was like the story just started and ended. The characters weren't relatable. I just flat out didn't like it.
This book rather leaves you with a 'so what' feeling. 136 pages, the last 10-12 of which were just ads for more James Patterson's books, did not give much character development. The basic story was interesting and the reader wonders what in the world is going on. As this races to an ending, you find you don't care what is going on since there has been so little growth in the personalities of the characters.

Some confusion as to who actually wrote the book - it is listed as a James Patterson Bookshots implying he is the author. But in the information included with the description, the author information is limited to Brendan DuBois. Is this because he is the author only under the auspices of James Patterson or was he a co-author with Patterson?

Bottom line is that this could have been a much better book with 250-300 pages of more elaborate writing and pursuit of some of the many threads introduced and subsequently dropped. A disappointment - primary recommendation is that it is a quick read. Regardless it still leaves you feeling 'so what'!!!
I found this book to be confusing yet left me guessing throughout. I didn't feel a connection in the beginning. I kept trying to figure out what on earth this family was under protection for, what could they have done or seen to create this situation. An archaeologist, a freelance writer, and their two children plus their keeper are holed up in a strange house in a small town (seems like a deadly town to me). Suddenly removed from their site in Tunisia by US helicopter without knowledge of what they have done leaves me wondering, too. This is an interesting book regardless. Beginning with a very unusual death, the main characters outside of the family seem to be odd to say the least. The rules the family must go by are to be strictly adhered to and they are under their "keeper's" constant scrutiny. But he is in fact their protector. Former/retired police officers also play a role, sometimes bringing some humor to the storyline. Overall, in the end I found some answers, but also questions. That said, there is a feeling of wishing it hadn't taken so long. Also, there appear to be some loose threads. Still, I read the book in one go, there was certainly suspense and it did keep my attention throughout. I would certainly give these authors another go, either singly or as a duo, to see if this is just a result of two authors.
Another great read from James Patterson's Bookshots! I really enjoyed this story and the character development that took place in such a short amount of time! Bookshots pack a punch of a story within a little over 100 pages. I'm amazed at how much happened and the events that unfolded in each chapter. This story had me hanging on the edge of each chapter and wanting to figure out what was going to happen. Great job, Patterson & DuBois! This is an action packed book that any reader could get sucked into!

This is a great James Patterson book that can be read in just 2-3 hours. A family's life is in danger and they wonder what their body guard is hiding. The excitement and danger prevent any lull in this book. Each member of the family has a different reason for the family to be living in a safehouse. Their nosy neighbor misreads the family's intentions and puts them into more danger. I couldn't put the book down and didn't want it to end.

I would love to read more short books like this by James Patterson.
